If you’re new to the world of green smoothies and shakes, it can be daunting to try and make something that isn’t instantly repulsive. They’re definitely an acquired taste when made without boat loads of sugars and sweeteners.

So here are 5 tips to get started on making great natural green smoothies.

Tips

1. Use Fresh Ingredients.

Greens that have been sitting in the fridge all weak and have begun to discolor will taste a lot worse than fresh greens.

2. Use Low GI Fruit.

By using high HI fruits you’ll spike your blood sugar, leading to inevitable drowsiness by the afternoon. Instead use fruits like cherries, grapefruit, peaches, kiwi, pears, apples, oranges, strawberries or plums. These can add sweetness without a crash.

3. Replace water, milk and other juices with unsweetened tea.

I make about a gallon of tea and refrigerate it. Medicinal and Herbal teas work best.

4. Spice it up

Add spices like cinnamon, cayenne, ginger or the zest of an orange, lemon or lime. A pinch of these can totally change the flavor.

5. Change is good.

We’re creatures of habit, that’s not always a good thing though, eventually, repetition can become frustration and disinterest.

Try to change your smoothie up daily and you’ll look forward to the next one. Whenever you make a mediocre smoothie you’ll know it’s just a one off and can easily get through it.
