Thick smoothies that go down smooth are a treat, unfortunately most recipes call for milk, creamer, whip cream, or all three.
While these ingredients add texture and are delicious, they are filled with calories and their flavor tends to get lost in the flavor of the other ingredients.

Which means that we’re consuming those calories and sugars without really tasting them, so it’s just a matter of texture.

If that’s truly the case, we can replace them with plenty of other ingredients to get the same effect.

Tips

1.Cottage Cheese.

Yup, cottage cheese, its low in calories, high in protein and works a lot like creamer once blended. Also great for creating a cheesecake flavor in many recipes.

2. Avocado.

Avocados are naturally creamy, it’s one of the main characteristics that makes guac so friggin awesome. Scoop half an avocado into your next smoothie.

3. Yogurt (dairy or vegan both work)

Yogurt is one of the staples of the smoothie world, especially for the exercise crowd. Avoid sweetened or flavored yogurts and you’ll get an airy and light smoothie.

4. Pureed Vegetables.

Whether it’s sweet potato, pumpkin, squash, or carrots. Cook them up and make them into a puree to get plenty of nutrients, and a subtle flavor of the veggie/s used.

5. Silken Tofu

What can’t tofu do? Silken Tofu is soft and dense, perfect for a thick smoothie and there’s literally no flavor.

Add ½ cup of tofu to instantly add volume.

6. Frozen Fruit.

This is the best replacement, my go to fruit is banana, peeled then sliced and bagged and placed in the freezer. Bananas add an awesome texture while providing a sweetness to the smoothie. Other frozen fruits like berries, peaches, kiwis, and mangos are all awesome as well.

Be sure to take their taste into account when making a smoothie.
