Make the most of your freezer to save time, money and effort in your smoothie adventures.
Smoothies aren’t rocket science. But if you’re not a morning person or happen to have the delight of raising kids, you might find yourself pressed for time. When it comes to the morning, breakfast isn’t even an option for you, at least not one that’s in solid form.
That leaves you with smoothies, but even then they can take quite a bit of time to make and clean in the morning rush. The solution is making your smoothies or their ingredients ahead of time for a quick and efficient breakfast.
We go over part of this in 5 Tips For Awesome Smoothie Prep. While its a great starting point, there’s so much more you can be doing!
You can actually freeze yogurt along with the other smoothie ingredients just fine, so long as you layer it to avoid having one big frozen chunk.
Another option is to place the yogurt into ice trays, let them freeze then place the appropriate number of cubes in each bag. This is great because it lets you buy yogurt in larger quantities (cheaper) and it prolongs the shelf life of the yogurt several folds.
I often end buying parsley or cucumber and only using a portion of it. Leaving most of it to rot and that’s a shame. But that’s in the past, what I do now is take these greens and place them into baggies, freezing them for future smoothies.
If you’re not a green smoothie kinda person, that’s ok. Just make smaller bags and you won’t taste them, but you will enjoy their health benefits.
It might sound a bit weird, but nuts and seeds don’t care for the cold or a bit of moisture.
When it comes to powders, mix them with the liquid you’ll be using so they dissolve and place them in a try to use as cubes in your prep bags.
If there’s a certain ingredient you like that’s going out of season or you just don’t want to waste too much time. Make 4-5 different types of smoothie bags and prep enough for however many you need for 1-3 months.
This way you have variety and plenty in case of smoothie emergencies. They’re small enough that they can be stacked without taking up your entire freezer too!
If all of your ingredients are frozen together, follow a 1:1 ratio of liquids to prep bag content. Pour in your liquids, then the bag content. If needed chop up the bag content quickly on a cutting board into 2-4 slivers and place them in vertically.
