Patriotic Independence Day Red White and Blue Smoothie

The story behind it

Independence Day is coming soon and that means fireworks, barbecues and debauchery of the finest order as millions of us celebrate our nation’s independence.

This summer is a particularly hot one. Between the heat of the weather, and of small explosives it’s important to keep cool. But as Americans we’re obliged to do so in the most patriotic way possible. With a Red, White and Blue smoothie! (Obviously!)

Ingredients

Blue Layer:
½ cup coconut milk
1 cup fresh blueberries
1 tsp honey
handful of ice cubes

White Layer:
½ cup coconut milk
2 tsp honey
Handful of ice cubes

Red Layer:
¾ cup coconut milk
1 cup fresh strawberries
1 tsp honey
Handful of ice cubes

Why is it so good for you

Now this smoothie takes a bit of effort, and I suggest practicing it once before. The payoff however, is worth it. Ultimately it’s just a lot of coconut milk and berries. That means antioxidants and ingredients that lower your cholesterol, (you’ll need it if you’re anything like my friends on the 4th) as well as help all that food goes down without stuffing you too much.

Preparation

Start by blending the blue layer ingredients, after they’re blended, place them in the glass you intend to serve in and place it in the freezer.
Clean the blender, place the white layer ingredients blend until smooth and then pour on top of the blue layer and return them to the freezer.
Clean the blender, add the red layer ingredients, blend till smooth and then place on top of the white layer, serve immediately.
